Bunions: When to Have Surgery

Bunions are one of the most common foot issues that people develop, but there are still many things that most people don't know about them. This can lead to delaying treatment, sometimes resulting in a need for an operation for correction. At Foot First Podiatry, Dr. Zahid Ladha can help people in the New Albany, IN, area knows when to have surgery and when it is not necessary.

What is a Bunion?

A bunion is a deformity that causes one bone of the toe to grow away from the rest of the toes. This usually leads to the big toe pointing towards the little toes rather than straight ahead.

What Are Risk Factors for Bunions?

Risk factors for bunions can include:

  • Improperly-fitted shoes (and nearly all high heels);
  • Frequent standing, walking, and use;
  • Trauma or injury to the foot; or
  • Arthritis.

Though bone diseases (such as arthritis) that can lead to bunions may be genetic, bunions are not directly passed down.

Can Bunions Be Prevented?

To prevent bunions, it is best to wear comfortable shoes that fit properly, especially if you spend a lot of time on your feet. Avoid standing on solid surfaces without a mat, if you can. If your job requires a lot of being on your feet, wear high-quality shoes. Inserts that are recommended for high/flat arches or special circumstances should be used if available.

When To Have Surgery

Surgery is currently the only corrective procedure for bunions. However, it is often the last resort. If spotted early, bunions can be maintained. However, they are a progressive form of a disease and can worsen despite prevention if certain things can not be avoided (such as standing for work).
