Green Tea May Offer Benefits for Alleviating Arthritis Symptoms

arthritis4.jpgThe “super food” green tea may now offer health benefits for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. A recent study conducted by the Arthritis and Rheumatology medical journal found that a compound in green tea, epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), helped reduce swelling caused by rheumatoid arthritis. The study, conducted on a group of mice, found that EGCG “appeared to reduce inflammation in [rheumatoid arthritis] without interfering with other cellular functions in the mice.”

The feet are one of the most common sites for arthritis to occur in the body. If you are struggling with arthritis in your feet or ankles, consult with Dr. Zahid Ladha of Foot First Podiatry. Our doctor will provide you with the foot- and ankle information you seek.

Arthritic Foot Care

Arthritis is a joint disorder that involves inflammation of different joints in your body, including your feet. Arthritis is often caused by a degenerative joint disease and causes mild to severe pain in all affected areas. On top of this, swelling and stiffness in the affected joints can also be a common symptom of arthritis.

In many cases, wearing ill-fitting shoes can worsen the effects and pain of arthritis. Wearing shoes that have a lower heel and extra room can help your feet feel more comfortable. In certain forms, such as rheumatoid arthritis, the arch in your foot may become problematic. Buying shoes with proper arch support that contour to your feet can help immensely.

Alleviating Arthritic Pain

  • Exercises that stretch the foot can prevent further pain and injury and increase mobility
  • Most of the pain can be alleviated with anti-inflammatory drugs, heat, and topical medications
  • Massages can help to temporarily alleviate pain.

It is best to see your doctor for the treatment that is right for your needs and symptoms. Conditions vary, and a podiatrist can help you determine the right method of care for your feet.
