Rookie Runners More Susceptible to Foot Related Injuries than Others

Description: NewishRunnerThe Orthopedic Journal of Sports Medicine has conducted new research recently that provides new information for avid as well as beginning runners. If you are new to running and have ablasé personality, are slightly overweight and older in age, you may be inclined to running injuries more easily than someone who is uptight, slim, and younger in age.

Danish researchers surveyed 930 new runners for one year (runners who hadn’t run more than 10 kilometers total in the past year). Out of the 930 new runners, 254 runners sustained a running injury in the study. Injuries reported were soft-tissue, bone injury of legs and or back. According to the study, age was a primary factor with new runners getting injured, and body mass secondly.

If you feel that you may have sustained an injury while running or would like tips on how to further prevent injury you should seek out the advice of a podiatrist such as Dr. Zahid Ladha, F.A.C.F.A.S. of Foot First Podiatry. Dr. Ladha can diagnose any injuries you may have as well as provide you with treatment and prevention options that work for you.

How to Prevent Running Injuries

Many common running injuries are caused by overuse and overtraining. When the back of the kneecap starts wearing out and starts causing pain in your knee, this is commonly referred to as runner’s knee. Runner’s knee is a decrease in strength in your quadriceps and can occur if you’re not wearing properly fitted or supporting shoes. Runner’s knee usually is treated with strengthening exercises focusing on the quad muscles and sports orthotic.

What Are Some Causes of Running Injuries?

- One cause of a common running injury is called iliotibial band syndrome.
- Plantar fasciitis is also another common injury.

Best Ways to Prevent Running Injuries

- Running shoes are the only protective gear that runners have to safeguard them from injury.
- Make a training schedule. Adding strengthening exercises as well as regular stretching can help keep you strong and limber and can lessen the possibility of injuries.
- Stretching keeps muscles limber, this will help you gain better flexibility.
