The Arizona Wildcats lost their running back, J.J. Taylor, as he sustained a broken ankle in late September. The injury was originally thought to be a sprained ankle, sustained during the second half of the loss to the Washington Huskies. At the time, it was thought that either Zach Green or Tyrell Johnson would replace him.

Broken Ankles
A broken ankle is experienced when a person fractures their tibia or fibula in the lower leg and ankle area. Both these bones are attached at the bottom of the leg and combine to form what we know to be our ankle.

When a physician is referring to a break of the ankle, he or she is usually referring to a break in the area where the tibia and fibula are joined to create our ankle joint. Ankles are more prone to fractures because the ankle is an area that suffers a lot of pressure and stress. There are some obvious signs when a person experiences a fractured ankle and the following symptoms may be present.

Symptoms of a Fractured Ankle

  • Excessive pain when the area is touched or when any pressure is placed on the ankle
  • Swelling around the area
  • Bruising of the area
  • Area appears to be deformed

If you suspect an ankle fracture, it is recommended to seek treatment as soon as possible. The sooner you have your podiatrist diagnose the fracture, the quicker you’ll be on the way towards recovery.

According to the American Board of Multiple Specialties in Podiatry (ABMSP), parents shopping for their growing children should select footwear “that promotes health and wellness.” Plan ahead by discussing with your child what style and brand of shoes they would prefer. Comfortable shoes that fit should allow for ½ inch of space between the toes and the shoe. Avoid online shopping and make sure to have your children try the shoes on in person. See your child’s podiatrist to determine your child’s foot size and shape, and whether they may need foot support in their shoes.

Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

Having healthy feet in childhood can help prevent medical problems later in life, namely in the back and legs. As children grow, their feet require different types of care from birth to school-age.

Although babies do not walk yet, it is still very important to take care of their feet.

  • Avoid putting tight shoes or socks on his or her feet
  • Allow the baby to stretch and kick his or her feet to feel comfortable

As a toddler, kids are now on the move and begin to develop differently. At this age toddlers are getting a feel for walking, so don’t be alarmed if your toddler is unsteady or ‘walks funny’. 

As your child gets older, it is important to teach them how to take care of their feet

  • Show them proper hygiene to prevent infections such as fungus
  • Be watchful of any pain or injury
  • Have all injuries checked by a doctor as soon as possible
  • Comfortable, protective shoes should always be worn, especially at play

As summer is right around the corner, it’s time to start making proper foot care a daily habit if you haven’t already. Keeping our feet clean and moisturized will keep them looking young and fresh, as well as prevent infections or conditions like cracked heels. Keep your toenails trimmed straight across to prevent ingrown toenails, and make sure that your feet are dry, especially if you sweat often. Everyday Foot Care

Also, wearing clean socks with closed shoes is important to ensure that sweat and bacteria do not accumulate within the shoe. Clean socks help to prevent athlete’s foot, fungi problems, bad odors, and can absorb sweat.
