Wearing shoes that fit well can also help you maintain good foot health, as well as making it easier to walk and do daily activities without the stress or pain of ill-fitting shoes, high heels, or even flip flops.

Also, wearing clean socks with closed shoes is important to ensure that sweat and bacteria do not accumulate within the shoe. Clean socks help to prevent athlete’s foot, fungi problems, bad odors, and can absorb sweat.

What are Orthotics?

Orthotics come in a wide variety of over-the-counter inserts that are used to treat foot pain, heel pain, and minor problems. For example, arch supports can be inserted into your shoes to help correct over arched or flat feet, while gel insoles are often used because they provide comfort and relief from foot and heel pain by alleviating pressure.

Prescription Orthotics

If over-the-counter inserts don’t work for you, or if you have a more severe foot issue, it is possible to have your podiatrist prescribe custom orthotics. These high quality inserts are designed to treat problems such as abnormal motion, plantar fasciitis, and more severe heel pain. They can even be used to help patients suffering from diabetes by treating foot ulcers and painful calluses, and are usually molded to your feet individually, which allows them to provide full support and comfort.

Amazon has recently bought startup company Shoefitr to help customers struggling to select the right shoe size while shopping online. The Pittsburgh-based startup uses 3D technology to help people virtually choose the correct shoe size without trying on the footwear. Amazon sells millions of shoes in its website and through Zappos, an online shoe retailer. Users of Shoefitr are asked to enter the size and model of their current shoe. The technology then compares this with its database of scanned shoes to recommend which size the user will need for any given shoe. Various factors such as shape, sole thickness, weight, etc. are taken into consideration.

Getting the right shoe size

Sometimes it may be difficult finding the right shoe size because shoe sizes tend to vary depending on the brand and company you are considering. A size 6 for one brand may be a size 7 in another. Although many people know their exact shoe size, shoe size can vary within two sizes depending on where they shop.

When shoe shopping, it is best to try on the shoe and walk around for a bit to see how it fits and how it feels. Comfort is essential and the shoe must fit well, as ill-fitting shoes can lead to blisters, bruises at the back of the ankle and can also hurt the toes if the shoe is too tight.

Many people who are travelling far for vacation this summer may have to endure long airplane flights. What many people do not realize is that sitting for a long period of time can detrimentally affect the feet; prolonged periods of sitting can increase the risk for the formation of blood clots. To improve circulation in the feet during a long fight, flex the feet up and down while sitting or take walks around the cabin.

Poor Circulation in the Feet

Poor blood circulation in the feet and legs is caused by peripheral artery disease (PAD), which is the result of a buildup of plaque in the arteries.

Plaque buildup or atherosclerosis results from excess calcium and cholesterol in the bloodstream. It usually restricts the amount of blood which can flow through the arteries. Poor blood circulation in the feet and legs are sometimes caused by inflammation in the blood vessels, known as vasculitis.

Causes

Lack of oxygen and oxygen from poor blood circulation restricts muscle growth and development.

It can also cause:

-muscle pain    -numbness in legs

-cramps             -skin discoloration

-weakness        -slower nail & hair growth

-stiffness           -erectile dysfunction

Those who have diabetes and or smoke are at greatest risk for poor circulation, or who are over 50.
