APMA Launches Educational Campaign for Podiatric AwarenessThe American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) recently released their informative education campaign ‘First Steps: Keeping Children’s Feet Healthy and Happy.’  The goal of this campaign is to bring knowledge to the general public about the importance of the role podiatrists play and how children’s feet need to be regularly maintained.

"It's important that parents pay close attention to children's feet even before they start to walk, beginning at birth and continuing as they take their first steps, go to school, and participate in sports."said APMA President Frank Spinosa.

It is a priority to help keep a child’s feet healthy.  If you are a parent, have your child see podiatrist Dr. Zahid Ladha, F.A.C.F.A.S. of Foot First Podiatry. Dr. Ladha can treat his or her foot or ankle needs and injuries as well as your own.

Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

Having healthy feet in childhood can help prevent medical problems later in life, namely in the back and legs. As children grow, their feet require different types of care from birth to school-age.

Although babies do not walk yet, it is still very important to take care of their feet.

· Avoid putting tight shoes or socks on his or her feet
· Allow the baby to stretch and kick his or her feet to feel comfortable

As a toddler, kids are now on the move and begin to develop differently. At this age toddlers are getting a feel for walking, so don’t be alarmed if your toddler is unsteady or ‘walks funny’.

As your child gets older, it is important to teach them how to take care of their feet

  • Show them proper hygiene to prevent infections such as fungus
  • Be watchful of any pain or injury
  • Have all injuries checked by a doctor as soon as possible
  • Comfortable, protective shoes should usually be worn

children's foot healthSole Hope, through Concord Baptist Church, proved instrumental in helping local citizens create shoes for poverty-stricken Ugandan children. Frequently barefoot, these children are at risk of a local parasitic insect getting under their skin.

Adding to the danger, this insect can actually lead to the development of a sometimes fatal infection, making this effort sorely needed. The fabric and other materials used to make the shoes were cut out by the volunteers who took part in the event. The shoes were assembled by workers in Uganda but were shipped straight to Africa by Sole Hope. This effort highlights both the importance of having the right shoes for children and how vital healthy feet are for healthy children.

To make sure you are keeping your children’s feet healthy; take them to podiatrist Dr. Zahid Ladha, F.A.C.F.A.S. of Foot First Podiatry. Dr. Ladha can work to treat your child’s feet and treat any conditions he or she may have.
