While we often think of skin cancer as affecting areas of the body that are most often exposed to the sun like your hands, face, and neck, you should also check your feet and ankles for signs of skin cancer since these tumors can be caused by chemicals and viruses, as well as from excessive exposure to ultraviolet light.

Skin cancers of the feet can be mistaken for other skin conditions including warts, eczema, and fungal or bacterial infections and often require a soft tissue biopsy for proper identification.

Three of the most common skin cancers that can occur on your feet include:

Basal cell cancer—Although this type of cancer is considered to be one of the least aggressive it is still important to have any lesions, bumps, or recurring wounds inspected by your foot specialist to ensure they are not malignant.

Squamous cell cancer—This is one of the varieties of skin cancer that frequently mimics other skin conditions, especially plantar warts, eczema and foot fungus. Squamous cell cancer grows very slowly and doesn’t start to spread until after it has reached an advanced stage. You will not notice any pain with this type of cancer, but it can cause severe itching.

Malignant melanomaThis is, unfortunately, one of the deadliest forms of skin cancer because it can go unnoticed and grow into the surrounding tissue where it can then spread to other parts of the body through the lymph nodes. Melanomas can also occur on the soles and balls of the feet and under the toenails. These cancers often look like bruises, warts, moles, or blood blisters.

Cancers on the feet often look like other skin conditions, so it is essential to have an exam done by your podiatrist for the proper diagnosis.
