Skin cancer is widely known to affect areas of the body that are regularly exposed to the sun’s harmful ultraviolet radiation like the arms, hands, face, and neck. Unfortunately, even areas of your body that don’t get a lot of UV exposure can develop cancerous skin lesions since they can also be caused by chemicals and viruses.

Cancers of the feet and ankle can be the most deadly because they often go undetected until the cancer has spread. Different types of skin growths can look similar so it’s a good idea to have any anomalies like warts, eczema, and fungal or bacterial infections checked by your foot doctor to make sure they are not malignant.

2 types of cancer that can occur on your feet include the following:

  1. Basal cell carcinoma—Basal cell skin cancer is not as potentially deadly as melanoma since it rarely spreads far beyond the place that it first appears. The lesions also happen on the surface and can look like small open cuts or shiny lumps. Even though this cancer isn’t very aggressive it can still cause localized problems when not treated early enough.
  2. Melanoma—This is often the most deadly of cancers because it can have a limited surface area but continue to grow inward where it can go undetected and spread to other parts of the body. Malignant melanoma can occur underneath the toenails where it can be very difficult to identify and it can have a similar appearance to moles, blood blisters, and other skin conditions, so don’t take any chances.
