Posts for tag: stress fracture in the foot
While many folks are under the impression that osteoporosis, or bone loss, is primarily a disease that affects women, the fact of the matter is that men are also susceptible, but usually show symptoms later in life and not as rapidly as those experienced by postmenopausal women. And despite the fact that men tend to experience fewer fractures in the feet and ankles from osteoporosis, their injuries tend to be more disabling and life threatening than for women.
Some interesting facts about men and osteoporosis include the following:
- Twenty percent of men over 50 will experience an osteoporosis-related fracture in their lifetime, with many of those occurring in the feet and ankles. A stress fracture in the foot is very often an early sign of osteoporosis. Almost one third of all hip fractures actually occur in men.
- Men also experience bone loss as they age, but not as quickly as women do during menopause.
- Looking for bone loss in men can be neglected, since it has been shown that doctors often do not check on bone health for men that have been admitted for fractures from falls or accidents.
- Men who are being treated for COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), celiac disease, depression, and prostate cancer should also be evaluated for the bone loss of osteoporosis.
Other risk factors for bone loss in both men and women include smoking, drinking more than 3 alcoholic beverages a day, a genetic predisposition, Parkinson’s disease, and multiple sclerosis. Certain medications may also increase bone loss.
