The Netherlands based Delft University of Technology and the Erasmus Medical Centre have developed a new 3D printed ankle device that will reportedly prevent ankle sprains. The EXO-L (short for External Ankle Ligament) is a patented, 3D printed external ligament that replicates the natural motion and anatomy of the ankle to keep it from twisting. The EXO-L seeks to support the ankle when there is a possibility it may be sprained while simultaneously providing freedom of movement. The device is positioned just above the ankle, over the Achilles tendon, and is kept in place by strapping into a special patch on the outside of the shoe. The EXO-L remains inactivated for as long as the ankle’s ligaments remain within the normal range for the sport or activity being played.

How Does an Ankle Sprain Happen?

According to a study conducted by scientists at Guangzhou Dongsheng Hospital and Guangzhou Social Welfare House, acupuncture is an effective treatment for heel pain. Sixty-six patients with some developed form of heel pain were used as a part of the experiment directed by researcher Xu Xuemeng and his team. The control group was compromised of participants that were given experiment drugs and the rest of the patients were given a filiform acupuncture needle treatment.

Within six months, the participants that had received acupuncture had an effectiveness rating of 97% while the effectiveness rating of the control group was just 76%. Acupuncture has been especially effective for those suffering from Achilles tendonitis and plantar fasciitis.

Causes of Heel Pain

● Heel pain is often associated with plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a band of tissues that extends along the bottom of the foot. A rip or tear in this ligament can cause inflammation of the tissue.

● Achilles tendonitis is another cause of heel pain. Inflammation of the Achilles tendon will cause pain from fractures and muscle tearing. Lack of flexibility is also another symptom.

● Heel spurs are another cause of pain. When the tissues of the plantar fascia undergo a great deal of stress, it can lead to ligament separation from the heel bone, causing heel spurs.

Those with desk jobs may be familiar with the sore backs and swollen feet that come with sitting all day. Brigham Young University students Matt Hulme and Brent Murray have created a solution to this in the form of The Foot Hammock. The Foot Hammock attaches to the underside of any desk, creating a place for feet to rest, and comes in mesh, fleece, and heated versions; mesh for shoes on, fleece to make bare feet feel snug, and heated to simulate the feel of an electric blanket. “Most of us spend more time at our desk than in our beds sleeping,” said Hulme. “It is time we make our hours at our desk as comfortable as ours sleeping.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s 2014 National Diabetes Statistics Report, about 60 percent of non-traumatic lower-limb amputations occur for people ages 20 and older who are living with diabetes.
