In the beginning of October, the city of Louisville will be holding what is being called a “stand down” for homeless veterans living on the street and in shelters through the federally funded Retired & Senior Volunteer Program. The program is offering foot washing for homeless veteran attendees. Many veterans, and other elderly, often experience problems with their feet due to diabetes. Homeless veterans in particular can also experience frostbite and other exposure issues.

Gus Edwards of the Miami Hurricanes will reportedly be missing the 2015 season due to a foot injury. The projected starting running back was injured during an August 22nd scrimmage and has been wearing a walking boot. Al Golden, coach of the Hurricanes, had originally expected for Edwards to miss a much smaller amount of time; Edwards’s injury, however, is much worse than originally thought. “He set a high standard and did a great job leading and being unselfish,” Golden shared in a statement. “We are tremendously disappointed for him, but we will be right there with him on the road to recovery and anxiously await his return.”

A special program in New York City uses running to help combat homelessness and get the homeless back on their feet. Back on My Feet connects participants with housing and jobs and has reached 5,200 homeless individuals. Over 1,900 have acquired jobs, and 1,300 have moved into independent housing. The program is based on the belief that running can alter a person’s self-image for the better, as early morning exercise at least three days a week can create an outlet for pent-up emotions and change the way a person thinks of hard work.
